Annual Dinner Events
Dinner Events are typically held three times per year concurrent with the vintage race weekends in May, July, and September in Elkhart Lake. All three dinner events include a pre-dinner reception, and a full course sit down dinner followed by a Program featuring luminaries from sports car racing past and present.

Fall HRC Dinner Event
SOLD OUT
The Fall HRC dinner and program will be held at Road America on Thursday September 12. The event will include a chance to do a Sunset Cruise in your own car on the racecourse. Members are encouraged to bring a “sporty” car to enjoy the Sunset Cruise. Following the Sunset Cruise will be a cash bar and a sumptuous Wisconsin buffet dinner from Millhome Supper Club in the Tufte Center. The buffet dinner will include three choices, Chicken Cordon Blue, Grilled Atlantic Salmon, and Roast Beef, including salad and desert. There will be coffee, tea, and a water setup, along with a cash bar.
Following the dinner will be the evenings program: ‘Meet the other “Donald”, Driver, Designer, Engineer, and Founder of the Donald Healey Motor Company. Learn of his remarkable accomplishments in sports car development with Nash, Austin, and Jensen’.
Join Tom and Kaye Kovacs (owners’ of Fourintune Garages, Inc, Cedarburg, WI), Mike Korneli, David Hobbs’ Recollections, and other ‘Healey Enthusiasts’ for a cruise into the automotive world of Donald Healey, CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire). Donald distinguished himself as a driver before he became well known as a car builder, winning the 1931 Monte Carlo Rally driving an Invicta.
Before the amalgamation of Austin & Healey, the DHMC (1946-1954) designed and manufactured eight different models with a low production volume of 23 cars (Healey Sportsmobile) to a high of 506. A Healey Elliot won the Alpine Rally (Coupe des Alpes) in 1947 and 1948, and the 1948 Mille Miglia Touring Class. Donald’s talents continued with collaborations with Nash Motors (Kenosha, WI) where Donald drove a Nash powered Healey at Le Mans in 1950. Another Nash-Healey team came in 4th overall at the 1950 Le Mans. Donald later won his class in the Mille Miglia driving a Nash-Healey. It is said the Nash-Healey preceded the Corvette by 2 years as America’s 1st Sports Car, as many 104 Roadsters were exported to the US.
Following the lead of fellow countryman Sir Malcolm Campbell, Healey made his way to the Bonneville Salt Flats, UT in 1956. Driving his Austin-Healey Streamliner (Supercharged, 161.274 Cu In) he averaged 200MPH establishing a new USAC Class’D’ speed record.
Donald’s efforts to make a more affordable sports car came with his association with Austin. Many of the Austin-Healey 100’s (also called the 100-4 since it had 4 cylinders) were exported to the USA. The “Austin-Healey 100/100-6/3000 Restoration Guide” shows total production of 73,004 cars which ended in 1968.
Lastly, Healey devoted from 1972-1976 his talents developing the Jensen-Healey with a Lotus 907 engine.
The Healey family home was little more than a block away from where David Hobbs grew up. David will offer up some interesting stories of their family ties, and when a “Healey” and a rope rescued him from an uncertain situation.
What do General Billy Mitchell, Roy D Chapin Sr & Jr, Donald Healey, Fred Wacker, Jim Kimberly, Amelia Earhart, and a Healy Silverstone all share in common?
Sara Chapin.
Sara (aka Sal, Sally, Sammy) won the 23 July 1950 Elkhart Lake Ladies Novice Race driving Jim Kimberly’s Healey Silverstone. Inspired by Amelia, Sara obtained her pilots license when she was 16. Her father Roy D Chapin founded The Hudson Motor Car Company, and her brother Roy Jr was Chairman of American Motors 1967-77. At 21 Sara joined the WASP’s and piloted Mitchell B-25 Bombers as well as most all other military aircraft. Like many other WWII pilots, she succumbed to the flying bug and continued her passion for 10 more years founding “Sara Air”, a charter company. Driving road racing cars was an easy progression from flying B-24 & B-25 bombers, P-51 Mustangs, and other warbirds.
Kimberly’s Silverstone is now owned by Mike and Debbie Korneli and will be on display at Road America during the HRC event. Other “Donald Healey” cars will also be on display, having come from the far reaches of the world for the VSCDA Vintage Race Weekend at Road America, and the 2024 Healey Conclave.
